What is therapy and, honestly, why bother?
You’re here because you’re considering starting therapy but maybe you’re thinking, “is it right for me?”. I can answer that for you.
Yes, it is.
Therapy is an effort but unlike the gym or healthy eating, it hasn’t quite got the same kudos has it? The opportunity for selfies, before and after shots or new gear pics just isn’t the same. It’s the hard graft without the showing off. Why would anyone bother?
We’ve all got a lens through which we see our lives, who we think we are in the world, who we are in relationships, how we perceive others and how we think they perceive us. Until we bring these beliefs into our conscious thoughts, we are all likely to be reconfirming our individual frames of reference. We all do it and most of the time it’s completely out of conscious awareness and on auto-pilot. All of us. And sometimes it’s unhealthy.
Continuing this way can get in the way of career success, meaningful relationships and contentment. Successful therapy results in significantly better understanding of our thoughts, opinions, biases, self sabotage and the unconscious compulsion to repeat the past, allowing you to be in charge of your way forward. Why would you not do it?
Feel free to take before and after shots actually. That might catch on.
